Video and Audio Wordpress Plugins for Use with Wordpress and Blogdesk

Bill Lombard asked which Wordpress Plugins I use for embedded video and audio.

I thought it would make an interesting short post (I’m busy this week). The tag formats quoted in this article do not link back to real videos.

The other special things about these plugins, is that they all have tag formats that are capable of being posted from the Blogdesk offline blog editor into Wordpress without their tags becoming mangled in the process.

Video and Audio Formats

I regularly post video in Windows Media (.wmv) and Quicktime (.mov) formats, and Audio MP3 files (.mp3) here, and also embedded Flash Video (e.g., Youtube).

Video I host myself

For Windows Video, I use Windows Media Posting. This has been reliable. This is the tag format (you need to insert it in the HTMLsource code) to show you how simple it is.

[WINDOWSMEDIA http://www.mattwardman.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/movie.mov 448 260 false true]

The first “true” or “false” value is whether or not it should auto play and the second is whether or not a controller should be visible.

For Quicktime Video, I use the Quicktime Embedding Plugin from the same source. For me this has been a little more shaky, but that could be my setup. This is the tag format (you need to insert it in the HTMLsource code):

[QUICKTIME http://www.mattwardman.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/movie.mov 448 260 false true]

The first “true” or “false” value is whether or not it should auto play and the second is whether or not a controller should be visible.

Audio Files

For Inserting Audio Files, I use the 1PixelOut Player. This is the simple tag syntax:

[audio:http://www.politicalspeeches.org.uk/media/audio-file.mp3]

Video Hosted Elsewhere - e.g., Youtube

For these I use WPvideo, which can insert the code for many formats of embedded flash video from just the url using this syntax:

syntax.

This is special because the pluging parses the web addresses from several sources and generates the right HTML code automatically.

Video sites supported (I have not used all of these):

Options supported:

 • Show download link.
 • Show video title.
 • Show video author.
 • Show video description.
 • Show video date.
 • Show video duration.
 • Show Metacafe rating.
 • Show Metacafe views.

Use with Blogdesk

Previously I posted that I use the Blogdesk offline blog editor.

The other special things about these plugins, is that they all have tag formats that are capable of being posted from Blogdesk into Wordpress without their tags becoming mangled in the process.

Wrapping Up

One other tip is that I always use full web addresses in referring to media files I am hosting (i.e., starting with the “http”). My reason for doing this is so that I can cross post an identical article to both www.mattwardman.com and www.mattwardman.co.uk. It also guarantees that my articles and sites are more portable.

There is, however, a slight performance penalty - but in my circumstances it is worth it.
